A desire for change led Miriam Andrews and Stephen Trites to transform a historic Dorchester property into a thriving community destination. Today, Lady Smith Manor operates as a full-service wedding and event venue with luxury accommodations and The Thirsty Whippet Pub, supported at key stages by CBDC Westmorland Albert.
Built in 1840 and once owned by former New Brunswick Premier Sir Albert Smith, Lady Smith Manor had been vacant for several years before the couple purchased it in 2019. Despite its condition, Miriam and Stephen envisioned a space that would preserve the home’s history while creating a welcoming place for gatherings, celebrations, and community connection. They balanced full-time work with extensive renovations to restore the nearly 10,000-square-foot property.
When they decided to add a pub, financial and regulatory requirements presented major challenges. Traditional lenders were unable to help, so Miriam turned to CBDC Westmorland Albert. Approval of an initial loan enabled construction to proceed, and when delays arose, a second loan and access to CBDC Client Advisory Services helped keep the project on track.
The Thirsty Whippet Pub opened in March 2024 and has become a popular venue for community events, markets, and unique experiences, attracting visitors from across the Maritimes. With diversified revenue from weddings, events, accommodations, and the pub, Lady Smith Manor is now positioned for long-term sustainability.
Miriam credits CBDC with helping bring their vision to life, noting that having a partner willing to invest in their success made all the difference.
